NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO SUMMARY FOR THE ST PAUL GAME. THIS IS THE LAST OF THE REGULAR SEASON. LOOKING FORWARD TO TONIGHT!!

5/22/21

Haddam Killingworth Boys Varsity Lacrosse closed out their regular conference season on Saturday with a 14-3 win over Lyme Old Lyme. With the win the Cougars finished the 2021 regular season with an overall record of 11-5, 11-1 in conference. This is the best regular season record and finish in the history of the HK boys lacrosse program.

Given the success on the season it is no surprise that the team was well represented at this year’s Shoreline conference awards for boys lacrosse. Head coach Lauren Braren was recognized as Coach of the Year, and middie Cal Braren was named Shoreline Conference Player of the Year. In addition, middie Cal Braren, attack Aiden Coleman, LSM Jack Insalaco, and d-pole Matteo Piacenti were all named First-Team All-Conference. Middie Cooper Savoy and Dan LaRosa were named Second-Team All-Conference.
Well-deserved accolades for all.

HK got out to a quick start against Old Lyme. Attack Aiden Coleman found the back-of-the-net early in the first with an assist from attack Ryder Wink, 1-0 HK. Later middie Cal Braren found his brother attack Nolan Braren on the right side of the crease for a wicked side-arm, 2-0 HK. Then just before the end of the first period C. Braren fed Coleman for his second goal of the game, 3-0 HK.

At the start of the second quarter C. Braren fired an overhead step-down winner from the top left of the crease, 4-0 HK.

Old Lyme managed to slow the Cougar roll with a goal of their own, making it 4-1. HK answered quickly with another strike from Coleman, this time with an assist from middie Cooper Savoy, for the 5-1 lead. It was all down hill for HK from there.

Coleman began the third quarter where he left the second, dodging from X for another strike and the 6-1 HK lead. He then fed middie Alex Phipps above the left post for another score, 7-1 HK. N. Braren struck from his favorite spot above the right crease, pushing the Cougar lead 8-1. C. Braren then found Savoy cutting down the lane for the quick hitter, 9-1 HK. Old Lyme scored to end the third, 9-2 HK.

Midway through the fourth quarter attack Tyler Gagliardi notched his second goal of the season with an assist from Savoy, 10-2 HK. Coleman then fed C. Braren for the step-down hammer 15 yards out front, 11-2 HK. Moments later, A. Phipps finessed one in at the doorstep, 12-2 HK. Old Lyme answered, 12-3 HK. On the next possession C. Braren found a sliding A. Phipps for another one-timer, 13-3 HK. Savoy then closed out the scoring, burning the back of the nets from 10 yards out-front, 14-3 HK final.

The defensive effort needs to be recognized in this game as well. Goalies Braden Civiello and Ethan Wright both played great games, with 6 and 3 saves, respectively. The LSM’s, defensive middies and d-poles all swarmed the Old Lyme attack, and hustled to loose balls. LSM Jack Insalaco scooped up five, and LSM Sam Young and d-pole Aiden Griswold grabbed three each. Middies Colin Griswold, Dan Larosa, and Charlie Maxwell each nabbed two loose balls to gain possession, and d-poles Matt Mohammed, Nate Marciniec and Matteo Piacenti each had one. Piacenti also notched an assist in the scorebook on a fast break.

Can’t wait to see what the post season brings for this group. Go HK!
